Fixing Magento 1.x image upload due to Flash uploader problem

As of  late 2020 Google Chrome along with other browsers will be depreciating Flash. As you may already have experienced Magento 1.7.x, 1.8.x, 1.9.x all have issues uploading product images. This is because the major browsers such as Chrome and FireFox are restricting Adobe Flash player.

To removed the Flash player upload issue you need to patch SUPEE-8788. Click the below link to learn how to upload SUPEE-8788 using FTP.

Install SUPEE-8788 for Magento 1.x without SSH

You can also download SUPEE-8788 for Magento 1.7, 1.8, 1.9 versions here.




  • Make sure the Magento compilation is disabled. To avoid “Fatal error: Class ‘Mage_Uploader_Helper_Data’ not found”

FTP upload the files, overwriting the existing files and delete the below files.


*Remember to always backup the site before making any changes.

If the image upload button is not working properly or the image uploads but can’t been seen in Admin do the below steps.

  • Flush the Magento cache, reindex Magento.
  • Logout and log back into the Magento Admin, repeat flush cache.
